Planetary Formation and Birth of Life
Deep within the Trifid Nebula was a small but well formed solar system consistent of an F class star and six small planets. The fourth planet closest to the F class star was a barren planet with no life on it. It had once been a planet made up mostly of rock, but due to the fast rotation of the planet there was a constant wind that eroded down the rock until it was relatively smooth. No life would have started naturally on the planet, but then a meteor with chunks of ice crashed through the thin atmosphere in the planet and created a large crater on the western side of the planet. When the ice melted bacteria was released onto the rocks, and into the small pool of water at the bottom of the crater. More water filled the crater due to a thin water table beneath the planet's rocky surface that had been broken through by the meteor. Although the heat of the sun evaporated some of the water the crater was deep enough to protect the water near the bottom.
Bacteria multiplied and formed different strains and soon enough microorganisms began to form. It was several million years before any visible form of life was seen, the first being a hardy type of lichen that quickly spread across the surface of the planet. Although the atmosphere was too thin to hold a weather system of it's own, steam vents across the surface of the planet provided enough moisture for the lichen to thrive. The steam was due to volcanic activity below the surface that quickly rose up from cracks in the planet's crust, forming steam vents. The lichen eventually split off into different varieties, a total of 27 different species in all. Plant life began to grow around the lichen, though it was mainly found near the steam vents since it was the main source of water on the planet. Some hardy plants grow that were able to get their roots down below the surface the underground water table. And so, life began to evolve further.
The creature that would later evolve into the Khanrii was a rather strange one. It was only two - three inches in length and had a short stocky head with a small beak-like mouth with short legs ending in pick-like claws to hold onto the rocks. There was only two food sources on the entire planet, the lichen and hardy plants that grew in abundance due to the stream vents which provided much needed moisture for it to grow. The creatures were only dimly intelligent and had the mentality of an insectoid. They bred like insectoids as well and laid small numbers of eggs. Their life span was short and they only lived for about 50 Khyndraa days. Although there was no name for them then, the current Khanrii call them Kypri in their history records.
Centuries passed and many other creatures evolved as well, ones that either fed upon the moss, plants, lichen, or even each other. The Kypri had an advantage over the other species as they had bred in great numbers long before. At this point in time the Kypri had evolved into a creature much larger and more powerful than the original Kypri. In fact they had split off into three different subspecies depending on the area they lived in. The first was the Kyrodax which was six feet long with a narrow needle-like mouth like that of a terran mosquito. They also had three diamond-shaped eyes on each side of the face and a frill of spikes around the back of the head. Unlike the Kypri the Kyrodax only had two sets of legs, one up front with a splayed set of pincers and two wider ones in the back. Their back was covered in overlapping plates of scales and they had a single tail that was short and flat. The Kyrodax fed mostly on microscopic creatures and they could also use their tube-like mouths to suck moisture from the air to drink.
Further to the south of the planet were the Theiron who were much larger than their northern cousins at a total of ten feet long and five feet high. Due to the axis of the planet the southern side was much more exposed to the sun and was that much hotter than the north. It was so hot in this area that plants could not grow and not even lichen couldn't survive for long on the exposed and barren landscape. The Theiron had somehow adapted to the environment and begun an evolutionary stage not often seen on other planets. The Theiron did not feed on microscopic creatures, plants, lichen, or other creatures. They fed exclusively on the very rock itself and digested the minerals and nutrients within the rock, much like a terran earthworm would do.
The third subspecies was known as the Rysinl, a form very similar to that of the Kyrpi but much larger at a total of 5 feet long and two feet tall. They fed upon lichen and moss and were vulnerable to attack by the Syrti, which was a two inch long tube-like creature that secreted acid and traveled in swarms. The two subspecies Kyrodax and Rysinl were completely wiped out by the swarms of Syrti which would swarm a creature and break down their bodies using the acid secreted by their bodies. It was the Theiron that would survive and carry the genes that would eventually bring about the Khanrii.
The final evolution of the Khanrii turned out to be a total of 5 - 10 feet in height and 10 - 18 feet in length. They had a beak-like mouth with pointed teeth in the front and flat teeth in the back. They could secrete acid which was used to help them dig and had eyes with extremely good color vision and attention to detail. The back of the head had a spiky frill and the neck was stocky. Along the back of the neck was a set of spikes that overlapped that were flexible in that they could be raises or set flat to express their emotions. The back was covered in protective armored plates that ended in points and the belly was protected by similar plates that were wider. The front feed were of medium length with wide claws and scaled webbing in between the toes for digging. The hind legs were longer than the front with a joint that would allow them to stand on their hind legs. The back feet were wider than the front with had more webbing between the toes. The final evolution also had a tail that was thick at the base but thinned out towards the back, ending in a point.
The Searei Incident
The Searei incident happened shortly after the Khanrii had developed to their final evolution and had become sentient beings. A large meteor crashed into the surface of the planet much like the one that had originally brought about life on the planet. The atmosphere was too thin to protect the Khanrii homeworld from the meteor and the resulting explosion sent shock waves across the surface of the planet. All the life that lived on the surface of the planet was wiped out, even the lichen was seared away from around the steam vents. It was a Catastrophic event that would have destroyed the Khanrii as well, except for the fact they had already taken to living underground because that was where their primary food source was. However, this incident would insure that they would no be able to live above ground for a long time after. The dust clouds sent up by the Meteor were not contained by the thin atmosphere and this it did not grow colder. Instead the heat waves caused by the explosion heated up the surface of planet further and the sand was hot enough to burn skin if anything touched it. This drove the Khanrii to live even further underground and it is also the reason why the Khanrii haven't been discovered up until recently. The readings from the planet make it unsuited to supporting any type of life, and on the surface there is no evidence that anything exists.
The Khanrii homeworld known as Khyndraa among the Khanrii has gravity that is 12.32 (m/s2). In comparison that is about three times more than Earth's gravity. The atmosphere of Khyndraa is formed of 23.32% Carbon Dioxide (CO2), 1.2% Argon, 0.99% Oxygen, 0.46% Carbon Monoxide, 63.34% Water Vapour, and 10.69% Sulfur. One day on planet Khyndraa is equal to 16.23 hours. A year on Khyndraa is equal to 10,450 earth days. This means that the planet rotates faster than earth but the rotation around the star in the solar system is much slower.
With so much heat across the planet and volcanic activity many different minerals and jewels have formed. Some rare, some common, and some unknown to any other place in the galaxy. The most common types of minerals and jewels are zinc, limestone, analcite, quartz, arctite, adamite, sulfur, crystal, amethyst, andratite, bronze, copper, chromite, lazurite, citrine, jasper, jade, slate, cuprite, and forsterite.
The Khanrii is an odd looking creature that stands at a range of height between 5 - 10 feet when standing bipedal and between 4 - 6 feet when standing on all fours. They have an odd beak-like mouth rather like that of a protoceratops. On the inside of the mouth near the front are rows of needle-sharp teeth that are two inches in length. Near the back of the mouth the teeth become solid and hard with a flattened surface that has thousands of tiny serrated bumps, more suited to grinding than the ripping and tearing teeth of the front. The Khanrii has no tongue but where the tongue would be are tiny pores that secrete a strong acid in order to break down the rock they feed on. There a thin layer of acid coats the bottom, ready to dissolve the rocks the Khanrii feed on. Near the back of the mouth are two hollow holes in the flesh from which they can force out a gush of acid.
The head of the Khanrii is narrow and wedge-shaped, made up of many pebble-shaped scales. The eyes of the Khanrii are usual oval or diamond in shape with a glass-like mineral coating to protect their eyes from the dirt when digging. The color of the eyes varies depending on which mineral they feed upon the most. Underneath the mineral coating the eyes secrete a fluid to keep the eyes moist, however this liquid also contains a luminescent mineral that gives the illusion that the eyes are glowing. As a result it looks like the eyes all glow one specific color. The Khanrii has a total of four eyes, two on each side which are placed in diagonal position with one eye slightly below the other but to the side. The pebble-like scales are smaller around the eyes and there is a protective ridge that runs above the eye area for added protection. The ridge is either bumpy along the top or serrated which gives them a rather fierce appearance. Near the back of the head is a frill made up entirely of spikes that face backwards and each one is anywhere from 2 inches - 3 feet in length depending on the age of the Khanrii.
The neck is generally short and stocky and covered in a layer of protective pebble-like scales that are set very close together. Running down the back of the neck is a row of miner-encrusted bony spikes that end in a sharp edge. These bony neckridges overlap one another and tend to lie flat, only being raised up when the Khanrii is upset or alarmed. The back of the Khanrii is covered in leaf-shaped protective bony plates that are made up of both bone and minerals. These leaf-shaped plated overlap one another and end in sharp points. The plates are somewhat flexible and can be moved up and down or slightly to the side in order to make a rasping sound when the plates scrape against one another. The color of the bony plates depends primarily on the type of minerals the Khanrii has been feeding on and sometimes they have multiple colors. The front legs of the Khanrii are medium length and stocky, mostly covered in pebble-like scales that are set so close together that they appear almost smooth. The top of the front legs tend to be bulky with muscle and thin out down towards the ankles.
The front feet of the Khanrii are interesting in that they are rather large with three forward facing toes and one facing to the back. Each toe is adorned by a scythe-like claw which is anywhere from 2 - 5 inches in length, generally hardened by minerals. Spreading in between the three front toes is a layer of leather skin covered in scales, meaning the feet are webbed which helps when digging. Underneath the tiny scales are pores which secrete acid which will also aid in the digging. The belly of the Khanrii is covered in bony mineral-encrusted plates like those of the back, only they are wider and fit closely together in or to protect the vulnerable areas. The hind legs of the Khanrii are quite muscular and stocky, though longer in length than those of the front. The scales also tend to be a bit larger and there is an extra joint to the hind legs to allow the Khanrii to stand upright if need. The hind feet are larger in width than the front with a wider span of webbing between the toes as well, and the acid secreting pores go all the way up to the ankles. Last but not least is the Khanrii's tail which can be anywhere from 6 - 10 feet long depending on the size of the Khanrii. The tail is thick at the base and thins out gradually into a point. With the females the tail is covered in pebble-like scales while in the males the tail is covered in smaller bony plates that flow down all the way to the end of the tail.

Color - The Khanrii are interesting because no single Khanrii is the same color. You are what you eat is a true fact for this particular race. Since the Khanrii feed upon rocks and minerals, mineral deposits are stored throughout the body. That also includes the scales and armored plates. Since each Khanrii is unique and seem to have their own favorite minerals to feed on it affects their appearance. For example a Khanrii who fed primarily on amethyst would be a dark purple in color due to the mineral deposits. The color can even change over time if they decide to change their diet. The primary eye color is also determined by what minerals they feed on.
Eyes - The eyesight of the Khanrii is different from that of many different races. Their eyes are not meant primarily for seeing heat or movement. Their eyes are primarily meant for seeing shades of light and darkness and color. This helps them to identify mineral deposits and to make their way through the darkness of the tunnels. They see on a spectrum much different from that of other races and for them colors are far more vivid, as well as how bright or dark something is. For example quartz will appear clear and almost transparent and gold will look almost luminous within a vein of quartz. To their sight edges are highly detailed and as such they can determine impurities or weak points within rock.
Main Diet - The Khanrii is quite unique in their feeding habits and there are not many races out there who have the same diet. The Khanrii feed primarily off rock and minerals and the nutrients found within them. The formation of this diet was due to the barren nature of the planet they reside on. On their homeworld there is no plant life and no animal life, which was all destroyed in the Searei incident. The surface of the planet is too hot for the existence of life. Rather than die out they adapted by feeding upon rock, minerals, and also microscopic organisms contained within them.
The Khanrii have a rather unique reproduction system. The female can only go into a reproductive cycle if a certain set of conditions are met. The male must bring the female Khanrii five different types of her favorite minerals to feed to her, which must not be iron or zinc. The female must feed upon these minerals to replace any sort of iron or zinc levels within her, as these two minerals are set as biological inhibitors that prevent pregnancy. The female also must have a high body temperature, preferable about +54 celsius or 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
Also, the male and the female must have a relative chemical balance. Since Khanrii tend to feed on different minerals and integrate them into their bodies, the male and female must have at least five of the same minerals contained within their systems in order to be compatible. If he does not have the necessary minerals a male can choose to feed exclusively on the same types of minerals the female did over the course of a few months to replace the minerls in his system...however most females aren't willing to wait that long and will search out a more compatible male.
Once all these conditions have been met, the male must insert his 'shorn' into the female. The 'shorn' refers to a reprouctive organ located at the tip of the tail. It really looks like a bunch of scales but they are porous in nature from which the sperm is released into the 'valis' of the female. The 'valis' is located at the tip of the female Khanrii's tail and looks like a bunch of tiny scales clustered together and like the 'shorn' they are porous in nature to receive the sperm.
Surprisingly the Khanrii are an egg-laying race and the incubation period for an egg is half a month on planet Khyndraa. This may not seem like much but a month on Khyndreaa is 870 earth days. Half of a month on Khyndraa is equal to 435 earth days. To a Khanrii it seems like little time but to many other races it can seem incredibly long. Instead of the eggs being carried inside the body...once there is a successful mating the female will shed the armor-like plates along her back. Over time large bulbous growths will grow on her back, the colors reflecting upon the minerals within her system.
These growths will eventually become oval in shape and have a hard mineral-ecrusted shell to protect them. The eggs are attached to her back as surely as her plates used to be and she will carry the eggs on her back until they are ready to hatch. When they are ready to hatch the eggs will fall off, leaving nothing but a rough mineral surface on the back of the female.
The eggs are as hard as rocks and the young Khanrii must make use of their acid in order to get out of the eggs. The mother will eventually re-grown her protective plates after gorging on minerals over the course of several months. Khanrii tend to lay between 2 - 8 eggs.
The Khanrii are a very long-lived race and as such they have much time to think, invent, and increase their knowledge. The mass availability of mineral resources has helped to accelerate this process. They may not be the most advanced technological race but few can compare to them when it comes to metal production. If any race should ever come across them they will have tons of new data to add to any periodic charts. With the vast resources available to them the Khanrii have discovered many new minerals previously unknown and have invented their own by combining these minerals using a variety of processes. Their greatest invention is the metal called Arakii which is incredibly hard and yet has the ability to change it's chemical properties with the introduction of a timed electric charge. This allows the Arakii to change shape and form and can change to a liquid or a gas state. Arakii in a gas state is extremely poisonous if inhaled by oxygen-breathing species as it replaces the oxygen in the body with carbon monoxide. Arakii in a liquid state works much like molten lava and is extremely hot. The Arakii is mass produced and is used to coat all tunnels in a solid state.
An important piece of Khanrii technology is the Grythii. The Grythii is a cone-shaped object that is fit over the tip of a Khanrii's claw. The Grythii is fitted with a small laser-inscribed piece of Luthan metal which is similar to a computer chip. Also inserted into the shell of the metal Grythii is a chip of Lillis metal, which functions as a thought sensor. Together this is a useful piece of technology that is made to work in concert with the Arakii metal that coats the tunnels. All a Khanrii has to do is focus on the image that they want the Arakii metal to form and the Grythii will emit the electric charge needed in order to make the Arakii metal change chemical properties to form the shape wanted. With this and the Arakii metal the Khanrii can make furniture, change the shape in the tunnels to confuse enemies, change the Arakii to either liquid or gas state, hide weapons, form weapons, hide their own forms, change the Arakii texture so that it has a rough surface or change it to a glass-like surface with no friction. They can also use it to transport things rather like a conveyor belt and that includes themselves. Arakii is precious because of the versatility and can be used to close off tunnels of necessary. All Khanrii are fitted with a Grythii and they don't usually take it off.
Another prized type of metal is known as Lillis. Lillis has the ability to pick up on quantum brain waves and is what gave birth to thought-sensing technology. A combination of Lillis and computer technology is what brought about the creation of systems guided by Telepathic thought instead of computed commands. To turn off or on a piece of equipment all one needs to do is form an image of the machinery running and the Lillis chip embedded in the machine will pick up on this and automatically start the machine.
The Khanrii are relatively new with space-exploration technology but with the use of various metals they have been able to improve upon it. It only came about because of one visionary Khanrii on the Huarde (Council of Elders) who wanted to explore the surface of the planet and what was beyond it. It took several prototypes to create a ship capable of surviving the extremely hot temperatures on the surface of the planet. It was only with the invention of a metal known as Ysirii that they were able to go forward with the production of space exploration ships called Sithiris.
The Ysirii was a metal that was not only heat-resistant but converted the heat into a form of energy. In turn this energy was harnessed by two Garntrii engines in the belly of the ship. The energy produced by the Ysirii metal was used for the propulsion of the ship as well. This technology worked well at first and the first explorers were able to leave the surface of the planet and even the orbit on Kyndraa. As they explored their solar system and went farther from the F class star, the Ysirii became cold and it stopped producing energy. They has no propulsion and ended up drifting in space and without enough resources on board they all died.
It has been 300 years since the first ships were produced and drastic changes have been made. Khanrii ships are almond-shaped and have no windows or visible openings. The entire ship is a smooth metallic silver in color and there are no rough surfaces. The outside of the ship is coated with the Ysirii metal but only to protect against extreme heat and not as propulsion. Beneath this layer of Ysirii the hull of the ship is coated with the precious Arakii metal that can change shape. In between the Ysirii and Arakii metal is a third type of metal known as Culais.
The Culais works as a refractor and directs all rays of light away from it. This helps to prevent the surface of the ship from becoming too heated and helps to protect the ship from laser-based weapons. A fourth layer of metal makes up the main hull of the ship and is like the protective shell of a turtle. This metal is called Takiyon and has an extremely high particle density. This makes it extremely difficult to cut through or breach and is the hardest metal known to the Khanrii. The current Khanrii ships are made only for exploration and are not combat-ready as they have never had contact with any other species. They live on a planet that would normally be considered inhospitable by any race and as a result have not yet been discovered.
A Sithris ship would probably confuse another race if they ever got inside. The inside of the Sithris ship has absolutely no controls. The ship is directed by thought alone in combination with a computer system integrated in the Arakii layer of the ship. The inside is sparse and plain and all supplies are kept in the belly of the ship which is concealed by Arakii metal. The ship is about twenty-five terraths long (25 feet) and can hold a crew of up to eight Khanrii.
The front edge of the ship is fitted with an array of chips integrated into the Arakii layer of metal. These chips acts as sensors that measure the distance of other objects around it, speed, hull pressure, life-support systems, particles, and temperature both outside and in the ship. Although the ship has no weapons it does have a powerful set of long-range scanners that appear as nothing more than ripples in the metal. All data that is scanned is sent to a Rithii, which is a thin later of metal that fits over the head and two of the Khanrii's four eyes that has Lithis chips embedded in it. This means that the data is fed through the Rithii and into the mind of the Khanrii. The Rithii has an advanced computer system and can make suggestions on courses of action after analyzing the data. It is up to the Khanrii as to whether or not they follow them.
Khanrii live in a society where they are spread out so that they don't place too much of a strain on any resources available to them. They live in small family units containing the Sretha (Mother), Turok (Father), Fethis (Children) and sometimes Kuindair (Grandparents). In the Khanrii society respect comes with age so if there is a Kuindair they will be the ones in charge and make the main decisions for the family. If there is no Kuindar available the eldest of the family unit will be in charge. If the Yuikarde (Family Unit) is growing too large it is the eldest that will leave and go out on their own. The entire society of the Khanrii is run by the Council of Elders, known as the Huarde in the Khanrii tongue.
To get on the council the Khanrii must be at least 1000 years old and have been a productive member of the society for at least 500 years. The council makes all important decisions that involve the society involving resource management, disputes, technological advances, industry, safety, environmental concerns, and other matters. There is even a Hierarchy within the Huarde and the eldest on the council will be the one that handles the most serious matters such as whether or not to go to war, judgement on serious crimes commited by a Khanrii individual, and anything decision that will affect the Khanrii as a whole. The youngest members on the council will be the ones to deal with petty complaints, territorial disputes, and construction. The council is held at one of the deepest underground caves on the planet that spans twenty Uilons (similar to earth miles) long.
Children remain with their parents until they are over 200 years old. Once they over 200 years they are trained by the eldest member in the family to perform a certain function in society. They are usually analyzed to see what they are suitable for and are not given a choice in their profession. If after 100 years they are deemed unsuitable for the profession given they will be re-analyzed and given a different profession to try. An adolescent who does not like the profession they have been assigned will often perform their tasks poorly in hopes of reassignment. Reassignment may happen sooner than 100 years if the task is done poorly enough that it waylays important deadlines or causes problems.
Each Khanrii is assigned their own living space consisting of one tunnel and three large chambers. In a family unit known as a Khetyrii these tunnels will connect to each other and will have a central chamber. The walls of the tunnels are metallic, coated by a special metal the Khanrii mass produce. The metal is know as Arakii and is twenty times stronger than steel and yet has the ability to change chemical properties.
