The best way to think of a wormhole is as a tunnel through a wrinkle in the fabric of space-time that connects two mutually distant points. As a result, it is possible for an object to get from one point to a another in a very short period of time, and without travelling through the space between those points.

Naturally-occurring wormholes are very rare, but are known to exist, and are usually stable. Artificial wormholes are difficult to create, and usually only last for a short time.
